Who We Are

A registered Canadian charity now in its ninth full year of operation, Dancing with Parkinson’s Inc. (DWP) creates and delivers dance therapy and movement classes for adults living with Parkinson’s disease.

By bringing participants out of isolation and into the community, DWP classes are a powerful opportunity to share the emotional and physical benefits of managing parkinsonian symptoms through dance.

Why We Are Necessary
There is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease, and the goal of treatment is to control symptoms. This has traditionally been achieved through the use of medications, which increase the production of dopamine in the brain. While many symptoms respond to drug treatment DWP provides an uplifting complimentary intervention in conjunction with medication that that addresses many of the emotional and physical aspects of the disease.

Dancing with Parkinson’s is the only organization in Canada that offers regular, sustainable classes in multiple locations to provide this necessary resource for those living with Parkinson’s disease.

Who We Help
The Parkinson Canada estimates that over 100,000 Canadians, over 40,000 of those in Ontario and over 5,000 in the GTA, have Parkinson’s disease today.  With PD most often diagnosed after the age of 50, the proportion of Canadians with PD will grow as the population of Canadians over the age of 50 grows.  It is important to build the resources now to serve this growing demographic.

Who We Serve

Each week Dancing with Parkinson's provides 10 classes throughout the Greater Toronto Area for people who are living with Parkinson's Disease.  The specially designed dance movement classes help the dancers stay engaged in community while celebrating the joy of movement. With your support DWP will be able to continue offering this necessary resource.
